Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

⁴³^(A)The next day Jesus decided ^(B)to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” ⁴⁴Now ^(C)Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. ⁴⁵Philip found ^(D)Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom ^(E)Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus ^(F)of Nazareth, ^(G)the son of Joseph.” ⁴⁶Nathanael said to him, ^(H)“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” ⁴⁷Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, ^(I)an Israelite indeed, ^(J)in whom there is no deceit!” ⁴⁸Nathanael said to him, “How ^(K)do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

Isaiah 53:5-8

⁵^(A)But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    ^(B)and with his wounds we are healed.
⁶^(C)All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
^(D)and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

⁷He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    ^(E)yet he opened not his mouth;
^(F)like a ^(G)lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth.
⁸By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, ^(H)who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people?
